I had tracked this moose and her calf for an hour before being able to get a photo where they weren’t obscured by the forest. Zoom in to see the little one sticking out its tongue. Always amazing to have a solo wildlife encounter in Yellowstone amidst the crowds of June.

For Moose Monday, this is a photo of a moose cow and her now year old calf. I watched them last spring after the calf was born. I’m glad that they both survived the Yellowstone winter. From May 5th 2025 in the Northern Range of Yellowstone.

A Moose Mom and Her Calf Eat and Swim in a Yellowstone Pond In June, Yellowstone moose calves are still very young and dependent on their mothers. Born in late May or early June, these calves are often seen closely following their mothers to learn and mimic behaviors essential for survival. The bond between the moose cow and her calf is strong, with the mother being fiercely protective. During this period, the calves are nursing but may start trying solid food. In this video, the moose mom takes her calf to a pond and encourages it to swim. Filmed June 23rd 2024 by Scott Brovsky, Big Sky Wildlife.
